Teatro Corte delle Fonti

Teatro Corte delle Fonti

The Fonti Antiche (Ancient Springs) of Ripatransone, located just outside the town walls, offer a window into centuries of daily life in the Marche region, where public fountains served as the primary water source until the 1970s. Documented as communal property as early as the 14th century, the springs were governed by strict rules for use and maintenance, sustaining vital local trades such as water carriers and washerwomen who used the gravity-fed stone and brick wash-basins.
Today, these surviving late 19th-century structures serve as the backdrop for the Teatro delle Fonti (Theatre of the Fountains). Created just above the old town’s courtyard following an initial restoration, its expansive semicircular tiered seating and lower square form one of the area’s most evocative open-air venues, hosting a rich annual summer schedule of rock, jazz, pop concerts, and opera performances.
