Stara Trta

Stara Trta

Here, in the heart of Maribor, Slovenia, stands Stara Trta, a vine with a story as rich as the soil it has grown for over 400 years.

Recognized by the Guinness World Records as the oldest vine in the world, this ancient marvel has seen centuries of history unfold around it.

Planted in the 17th century, during the turbulent times of the Ottoman Empire's presence in Europe, Stara Trta thrived in what was then a fortified medieval town. The vine grew along the city walls of Maribor, which once protected its citizens from invaders. Over the years, it bore witness to shifting borders, changing rulers and the evolution of Maribor from a medieval trading hub to a vibrant modern city.

Despite facing wars, natural disasters and urban exposure, Stara Trta has survived, becoming a living monument to endurance. Its survival through the ages symbolizes the perseverance of people of Maribor and their deep connection to the land and its tradition.

Each autumn, Stara Trta's grapes are carefully harvested in a traditional ceremony, linking today's community to centuries-old winemaking practices. The small quantities of wine it produces are not for sale but are gifted to honored guests and institutions worldwide, sharing Maribor's heritage with the world.

Today, Stara Trta stands as the cornerstone of the Roots of Time project, celebrating its historical significance and preserving its story for future generations. As a living relic of Maribor's past, it continues to inspire awe and pride, reminding us of the stories that trees, vines and landscapes carry through time.
