The Town Hall

The Town Hall

The Town Hall, built in the 12th century, has undergone various transformations; completely restored in the 17th century and remodeled again in the 19th, it retains almost nothing of its original architecture today. The main facade faces Piazza XX Settembre and features a double staircase of 15 steps, a rusticated stone portal surmounted by the municipal coat of arms (a lion atop five hills), traces of two blocked arches from the "Loggia degli Anziani" (Loggia of the Elders), two coats of arms with inscriptions commemorating the merits of governors Tommaso Acquaviva (1662) and Giovanni Mattei (1718), and a wall-mounted sundial.

On the first floor, in the first room to the left, there is a fragment (the head of Saint Vincent Ferrer) of frescoes painted by Giacomo da Campli (15th century); the adjacent room (currently used as the archive for the Justice of the Peace) houses a diptych by the same artist, depicting the Virgin nursing the Child and Saint Mary Magdalene (dated August 6, 1461). The hearing room, which served the Magistrate's Court until 1999 and the Justice of the Peace from March 26, 2001, contains "Icarus," a tempera painting created on November 3, 2000, by Felice Levini (born in Rome in 1956).

The second floor houses municipal offices, and most of the ceilings feature decorative paintings; the ceiling of the Ceremonial Hall was painted by Dionisio Rossi. This hall also houses portraits of notable figures from Ripatransone (17th–18th centuries) and a marble bust of Victor Emmanuel II (1879) by the Sienese sculptor Giovanni Duprè. The third floor houses two municipal offices and two archives, the municipal historical archive (reorganized and digitized between 1989 and 1993 by Professors Emilio Tassi and Walter Michelangeli) and the district notarial archive, which constitute a valuable source of information not only for the city but also for the surrounding area, given the extensive nature of the documentation.
