Museo vescovile d'arte sacra

Episcopal Museum of Sacred Art

The Diocesan Museum of Ascoli Piceno is housed on the first floor of the Bishop's Palace, a building dating back to the 15th century, and was established in 1961 at the behest of Bishop Marcello Morgante; following an extensive restoration and re-display of the collection, it reopened to the public in 2001. The museum's layout spans five rooms and a gallery, where artworks and liturgical objects from the Cathedral of Sant'Emidio and other churches within the diocese are preserved and showcased. The collection features a valuable array of sacred art, an important expression of the local culture of Ascoli, including wood and stone sculptures, decorative fragments, furnishings, sacred silverware, and fine paintings by artists such as Carlo Crivelli, Pietro Alemanno, and Cola dell'Amatrice. Also on display is a silver-sheet statue of Saint Emidius by Pietro Vannini, dating to 1482.
In the gallery running the length of the museum, visitors can admire examples of goldsmithing that, over the centuries, served as precious expressions of devotion and liturgy.
